Dear Sir.

My name is Alan Cato. I was a cadet at 296 sqn from 1954 to 1959, and also my older brother John Cato, was in the sqn around the same time. I was a band member for most of that time, starting with playing the cymbals, and then onto side drums. The band master was Ronald Broome, a very nice person. His photo can be found on your Web site on Oct 1949, he is on the front row, left side, first seated.

I was also amazed and pleased to find my picture also on your Web site for Oct 1957 band practice, the photo is number 5 from the left, and to the right of the drum major. The cadet to the left was my good friend Ted Wilkings, a lot of good friends were made including, Johnny Ester, Ernie Wild and Teddy Ede. Where are they now I wonder?.

The band at the time was very good, and we performed all over in competitions, shows, also the Royal Tournament and at the Royal Albert Hall. Our Wing Cdr L.Price with his brother composed a lot of our marches, and the one I remember well was Waltz Abbingdon, after one of the summer camps we all enjoyed going to.

How nice it would be to hear that tune again, and also be in-touch with old friends. Our flying outings were at Hendon, the planes at that time were Avro Ansons, Austers, and De-Havilland Chipmunks, great times.

I have found 5 photos for your Web site:

Photo 1 Albion Rd Sqn going back to H/Q after church parade, date approx 1954/55.
Photo 2 R.A.F Marham summer camp Sept 1st 1955.
Photo 3 Press cutting of myself, P/O Broome, and Wing Cdr L Price, date about 1956/1957.
Photos 4 & 5 The Royal Albert Hall Remembrance service date about 1958/1959. Sorry can't be more precise.

My best wishes go to you all, and passed cadets of ATC 296 sqn, and a big thank's for the happy memories the 296 sqn gave me.

Yours Sincerely Alan Cato
